The domain name is the first thing people see when they visit your website, blog or business online.

I bought my first domain name 2 years ago from Namecheap. I bought 2 more thereafter.

This year I bought a domain name from Godaddy. It was then that I realized that not all domain name registrars are equally providing the same kind of service and features.

Buying a domain name requires some research and a good amount of discretion.

Before buying a domain name, it is prudent on your part to shop around first and compare each and every one of those domain name registrars you feel is the best one for you.

The First Thing you must consider when shopping for a domain name provider is the Price.

Some Registrar will offer a rock bottom price for one year and renews at a price 10 to 15 times higher. Be aware of the renewal price when buying a domain name at a discounted price.

For instance, Namecheap is offering to sell a domain name at a discounted price of $3.88 for its .info domain name but it will renew at $10.47/year. A nice bargain if you ask me.

Godaddy, on the other hand, is offering to sell a .com domain name at a discounted price of $2.99 for one year but it will renew at $14.99/year. Compare that to Namecheap for instance.

Between the two domain name providers, which do you think is a better deal?

The Second Thing you must consider when shopping for a domain name provider is Domain Name Privacy Protection.

You are aware or may not be aware that anyone who is interested to know your personal details can easily do so by just searching the Whois database.

Whois databases store contact info for the owners of all registered domains. Name, address, phone number and email address are all listed. Whois also contains domain availability status, registration/expiration dates, and related information.

You might not want your personal contact info to be accessible to anyone who searches the Whois database.

In searching for the registrar from which to buy your domain name, see to it that the domain whois privacy protection is included in the purchase price of the domain name you are purchasing and if not, be sure that it is less expensive compared to the other domain name registrar.

For instance, Namecheap provides a free one-year WhoisGuard privacy protection for your domain name. It renews at an affordable price of $2.88. Again, A good bargain if you ask me.

Compare that again to Godaddy. Godaddy offers to sell its .com domain name for $14.99/year but it does not come free with a Whois privacy protection. In fact, Godaddy offers to sell its Whois privacy protection for $7.99/year. All of the figures mentioned above are in US dollar.

Remember that Whois Domain privacy is essential if you want to keep your personal information safely locked away for your protection against

  • Domain Related Spams
